I found a neat look that works and is relatively low-maintenance for people with curly hair but want it to be emo. (I have this myself actually).

- Get your hair layered so that it will curl, and medium-length bangs with more layers
- I personally got vivid highlights in mine (bright red, blues and yellows work well) "Peekaboo" highlights are great (meaning hidden underneath) so that the colour doesn't look bad when growing out -Keep it curly!! When it is wet, brush it and make a part (probably side part).
- Use curlling mouse and scrunch (Pantene curl mouse product is great!). Bend your head upside down to get maximum curl
- ONLY blow dry bangs, and straighten only the bangs!!

This looks so much different from the usual emo style. Just because most have straight hair does not mean that ALL emos have it.  Its great to embrace what you've got rather than change it. Saves a lot of time and causes less stress on your hair and for that matter yourself when you're trying to keep it straight all the time. I know...I used to be emo and I would spend over an hour a day on my hair alone. It wasn't fun at all. This look is very different and I found, got a lot more attention. It can be beautiful with curls or when straight. Takes less than 10 minutes to do too! You should consider trying it :) Oh and helpful hint...the emo look usually combines hair/makeup and clothing. So if you're still fretting over curly hair and the emo look, try playing up the eyes or matching the highlight colours with the eyeshadow. Makes a big difference :) Enjoy!

OKAY GUYS. here is what you need to do, first don't worry about the curl as much just worry about containing frizz that's what kills you. 2nd it makes it a whole lot easier if you braid your hair while its wet and sleep with it over-night, this makes it easier to straiten. if your going to blow-dry your hair then you need to get an attachment called a diffuser, its got pegs over the flow of air so that it doesn't frizz your hair out, they work great. my hair is naturally red with black streaks and i do this every day, its flat as  paper.

I have thick curly hair. it used to be really long,I decided to cut it short. Itv got puffy for first day but next day it was fine. What I did was put the hair in a ponytail over the night. Try this, it works

Advice by Ashley 18-Jan-2009

My hair is about the curliest and thickest of my life. But then I got it layered and it looks MUCH better. And it looks kind of emoish, because it looks like straight haired emoness only curly. I just straighten my bangs and poof each layer separately. Then I take the three layers I have and put about 1/3 of it in the front and the rest in the back. Simple. But for SUPER ease, brush AFTER applying gel, if you use it, and BEFORE mousse, because that stuff works for our type of hair.

Advice by Alexia 31-Dec-2008

my hair has really big curls not small ones that most people have. my hair is also very very thick. so what i do is get layers but you do NOT want to get a razor cut cause it will damage your hair really badly. i take my showers at night instead of mornig cause my hair takes a long time to dry cause it is so thick. well one way is to get emo side or full bangs and straiten them then put your hair up in a pony tail side pony tail or picktails. it looks really good! or you can straighten your bangs and leave the curly part in the back. also do NOT go to short sholder length or lower is good cause with me the shorter my hair is the curlyer it is.

Advice by Curlieq 29-Dec-2008

ok listen up. i have really curlier hair an 4 all the people who say to not wash your hair i found a way that u can an your hair will still be gorgeous use a shampoo that is made for for women of color. it helps your hair stay less frizzy and to make it emphasis put some low lights in and even like hot pink or red. put a couple bows in the front still leaving bangs to cover your eyes an cut it kinda medium length. if this helps i am glad.

Advice by Lil 15-Dec-2008

A Pixie cut looks great with curly hair I used to have REALLY short curly hair and it looked great and had almost zero work to do with it. Just remember not to cut it any less than 1 1/2 inches in the front.

Advice by Amber 23-Nov-2008

My best answer is get it chemically straightened or if you don't want to use chemicals just go to a hair salon get a straighten perm. That's whams I use. Don't use a brush when it gets frizzy try to use a wide-toothed comb if you can. I have curly hair too and I find if I straighten it (with a straightner) and it gets frizzy use a dryer sheet. It works well.

Advice by Ollie 12-Nov-2008
I have super curly hair, i tried the long thing and didn't work out so well. what i do is i cut my own hair to about my shoulder and layer it randomly have your mom or a stylist do b/c i know what i am doing. then scrunch it up and put curling cream in straighten the bangs and wala! You have amazingly cute hair or so i have been told and it's completely unique and it doesn't damage your hair like chemical straightening or just straightening it!

Advice by Sarah 12-Oct-2008
I just go for a scruffy look by shoving it in a high pony tail at the back with a lose curl left either side of my face clipped into post ion with a quiv and head band not quite emo but it works for me when i have those can't be bothered days but it might not work for everyone.

Advice by Nicole 3-Oct-2008
I wanna get short emo scene layer and my hair is curly, best advice is you straighten once in a while and get some major bangs/fringe then get a whole bunch of awesome extensions they do wonders. I am only 12 but be live me! I have had a lot of experience with hair.

Advice by Alex 19-Sep-2008
I have a solution for emo/punk looking curly hair! all you have to do is this:

1. Keep it long, go for just past your shoulders or down to your chest (this is the best).

2. Keep it ALL the same length - only a few slightly shorter curls at the front is ok.

3. Wet your hair and come it out. Give yourself a side parting, but quite close to the middle of your head.

4. You need to add a side bang . . . its kinda the same for straight hair but it has to be smaller cos otherwise it looks rong . . . it wont work tottally like a straight side bang but it does not need to . . . to do this make a small triangle with the top point on your parting (if your not sure about it look up how to get a side bang on you tube or something just make it smaller cos they're probably doing it for straight hair) - put this to one side.

5. Put hair mousse on and leave to dry, dont blow-dry, towel dry OR tuck it behind you ears!

6. When it's dry put most of it infront of your shoulders, as you've put mousse on it it will stay down and not go frizzy . . . leave the "side bang" to hang over your eye or where ever it wants . . . generally let your hair look slightly messy but just makesure its fairly flat.

7. If you want you can add bright streaks!!

Follow these 7 steps and you will have your tottally emo/punk looking curly hair . . . believe me it doesn't look like some someone curly trying to be emo . . . it TOTALLY works.

good luck dudes

I have really curly hair. its right at my shoulders. what i do is i apply a leave in conditioner right when i get out of the shower. then i straighten my bangs. i let it dry naturally, it works best. sometimes i even go to bed with my hair a little damp. it makes it not a poofy in the morning. all i have to do when i wake up is put a little watwer in it. it works amazing!!! try it!!!

Advice by Kensi 29-July-2008
I have shoulder length curly hair. it is very curly! and i can figure out how to do a emo punk hairstyle that is almost impossible!!! so if you have anything that could help me instead of having to go and get it cut that would be like SOOO amazing.

Advice by Sarah 11-July-2008
It really depends on how curly your hair is.  If you're talking almost an afro - a cool punk style would be to accentuate the complexities, embrace the frizz and go all out!  The bigger, the better and throw in a funky barrette for fun.  Pigtails on either side of your head of little afro-puffs would be very cute too.  If you have a corkscrew thing going on, try a jagged cut, but go to a salon where they know what they're doing - keep a few longer corkscrews while the rest is several inches shorter.  Do not - I can't clarify this enough - DO NOT get a razor cut.  I've been there and all it does to curly hair is destroy the ends really really bad.  Another suggestion is to go retro - perhaps a 1940's style or rockabilly thing can be pulled off fabulously with curly hair (no need to pin-curl, you already have it!), but that sometimes takes a lot of work.  Search the internet for rockabilly hairstyles and see if it's something you'd like.  My last suggestion, and often your best bet, is color, baby, color.  Go with a complementary cut for your face's shape that makes your hair look great and healthy, then throw in some fun streaks, or color the whole thing cool red!  Have fun with it!  Best of luck!

Looks like I'm about a year late for this forum! I have super curly hair as well and it looked pretty cool with the front long and the back really short, I just straightened out the bangs every day. From the front it was long and straight, then the back was like POW! super curly and short. I'm talking like 1" long in the very back and about 6"long in the front. I also think that short on one side and long on the other works with curly hair. The gradual sloping look in the back. Totally 80's, but would be rocking to have the colors change as they go around your head.  My next haircut is going to be random mullet. I'm stoked about that one! purple curls with gangster lines and a few random curly rat tails. Oh Yeah! Curly hair is such an asset I wouldn't ever straighten it all. Just dye it a few wild colors, frizz it out, throw it over to the side. You can also get wild colors braided and twisted into your hair, I stopped in an African braiding shop and they had some really cool colors and all types of braids from micros to thick dreads. All this to say, don't try and conform to the straight styles! have fun with your curls, make those lame straight hair girls jealous! you can always straighten your hair if you want, but they can't achieve wild curly colorful hair. Have Fun!

ok I'm 16 and have very thick curly hair i have found an awesome hairstyle called scene or emo. I am just wondering if my hair will get really poofy if i cut it that way and please answer me as soon as you can.

Advice by Liveitup 27-June-2008
the true emo/punk look is hard to get with curly hair ...i have the same problem.all i do is pull my bangs across my face and scrunch my hair with hair gel to control frizz and size. i also sometimes instead of straightening it all the way ...i just straiten the top part and let the bottom curl. i am thinking about getting my hair thinned because it is sooooo thick and full of body and i hate it. but my hairdresser said that it would make it even more puffy...help? should i? thanx

Posted by Marylouk 16-June-2008
I have curly hair also and ive tried straightening it but it gets so frustrating i desperately want to dye my hair pink but i don't know how well it would work because my hair is so poofy i was thinking though if it was short and i curled it so the curls weren't so tight it would work.

Posted by Shane 16-June-2008
I have VERY natural curly hair. I am also a stylist. I have had just about every hairstyle and color you can imagine. And with everything I have tried the best product for keeping curls under control and for straightening is a little dab of V05. It's the only ting I use and the only thing that works. Put it in your hair while your hair is still wet. Then style. It works great for straightening and keeps the flyaway's away.

Posted by Lina 12-June-2008
I have really really curly poofy hair so I am going to get temporary highlights in pink and blue with some fake piercing. (cant take the real pain)

Posted by Sara 11-June-2008
hey so i just made my own curly hair emo.
just layer it and get bangs that cover one of your eyes. but make sure they only go up to the end of ur nose.

Posted by Rose 10-June-2008
Alright, I have a pretty good style for you. First off I get it thinned. next I suggest getting it in a choppy layered, with the shortest be about a little above your cheek bone. That would be the bang length. After, you could get a sharp "V" shape in the back. Even have one side of your bangs longer then the other, and have it very choppy. Oh, you could even have it died in random streaks through out..... That's how I had mine done. It works well when you want to put in up, down, straighten, or what not.

Don't Cut It Short it looks allot worse! im 13 and everyone calls me EMO! So i stick with it! :) i like emo now its cool. Well my hair used to be brown and now its Black with a tint of blue, its Scottish, but ive got extensions, and they look amazing, i have big bangs across my eyes and face, my boyfriend loves it, its jet black, and with slices of blonde in, and red, my hair is naturally curly, and a mess! Just leave it, my hair looks good curly and straight! TRY IT OUT! Hope This Helps! :)

Posted by Sophie 7-May-2008
i have curly hair that ends up being extremely poofy when straightened so i gave up trying to have straight hair so what i did was cut my hair up to chin length and everyone loves plus it gives you a lot to do and it gets less curly and does not get huge in humid weather.

Posted by Mariana 7-May-2008
Trust me, don't but those cheap chemical straightening things at CVS, if you want the real deal, go to a professional hairdresser, and ask for the Thermal Japanese hair straightening. It works wonders! I have super curly hair, and it made my hair pin straight and everytime it got humid i didn't have to worry about a thing! :D So just make sure you know the guy knows what he i so doing. Cause when i got it my first time, the guy missed like this one chunk of hair, so all my hair was straight except this random curl, it was soooo annoying! So yeah hope that helps.

um people, i have really very curly hair an have been looking for an emo look for it an think i've found some good results!!!! one of my mates has her fringe cut short so it just covers her eyebrows and just straightens her fringe an nothing else, she also dyes it mahogany and adds the final touch of a bow clip - seriously it works!!!! curly hair rules :)

Posted by Kari 29-April-2008
ok i have curly hair that poofs when its humid and frizzes real easy ...i was down wit the whole straightening your hair thing until it was to much of a hassle...so now i leave it curly most of the time...but now i wana get a emo haircut cuz a new school year will be here soon and i just want something new and different...some of yall's comments have helped so far but just one question ...should i leave it like shoulder length and get layers?!?!? then i wanted to dye the tips of each layer like red or something i have dark brown hair...if u have anymore suggestions plz tell!! thnx!!!! :)

Posted by Meg 12-April-2008
Trust me when I say don't cut it short...tried  it doesn't work. Highlights look cool at first but then as your hair grows it looks odd. What ever you do don't use chemical straightening. This girl at my school did that looked cute for almost 2 years then her hair started 2 fall out.

Posted by Pyrochan 28-Mar-2008
I've got super curly reddish hair and for so long I stuck with the "keep it long" thing. Keeping it long is almost as big a hassle as straightening it - I have got a wicked haircut that's all short at the back running to long at the front so I really push up the curls ate the back and pull them long at the front. I also highlighted my hair redder than it is. Like said before, don't shampoo your hair often, it's a killer. So yeah, love your curls, work with them. Who wants straight hair anyway!

Posted by Kayleigh 20-Mar-2008
I HATE my curly hair. i love the emo style and culture, it's just my thing. but i just can't straighten my hair. period. its so hard, therefore i usually get my mom to do it for me. but she has started to get really ticked when i asked her to. I desperately try to straighten my hair but the humidity makes it so messed up. I'm very curious about thinning out my hair and cutting it a little shorter than shoulder length. my question is, how will it grow back again it i don't like it? will doing this screw my hair? please help!

Posted by Claudine 24-Feb-2008
emo hairstyles are very fashionable today especially for teens.for girls, emo hairstyle are more pleasing to look at for long and black hair. emo usually comes with a bangs that almost cover a face, just make sure that it won't be a hassle to you (ex. when you write something). don't apply any unnecessary hair color ok! it will make your hair look exaggerated. but remember, always feel good about your hair and wear it proudly

Posted by Paige 22-Feb-2008
I have curly, very thick hair, and I too have been looking for a cool emo haircut.  I'm considering the asymmetrical cut and letting it poof out as well because my friends all think that it would look 10 times better :)

Posted by Lamis 15-Feb-2008
i have the wavy thick hair that puffs when it dries too it used to drive me crazy as an emo it teases me but now i am over it even that i had the very short hair cut too i just put some hair gel and leave it.

Posted by Jenna 9-Feb-2008
For the girl who wants a punk look for curly hair. Curly hair is the best hair for highlights. I have enough hair for about 5 people and it's super curly. I got really small blue streaks all over my head. The way it twists and does what ever it wants looks awesome. All i do to maintain the curls is use mouse after i get out of the shower and then i let it air dry. I used to straighten my hair, but at the first sign of humidity it would frizz. I've come to love my hair, just gotta find what works for you.

Posted by Charlie 27-Jan-2008
hey i have really curly hair and like everybody else said straightening it everyday is just not possible so what i did to get emo bangs were i had my mom cut them and then i got some hair gel stuff and when i get out of the shower i put it in there and then i flip my hair upside down and scrunch it then when my bangs dry i go and i straighten just the bangs and the rest curly and down and i started a fashion trend doing that in my school and now everybody is wearing their like me (well not really everybody but i think you catch my drift right?)

Posted by Jessica 26-Jan-2008
OK, first of all. whatever you do.. DONT CUT YOUR HAIR SHO RT.. i learned that mistake and yes it looks HORRID when humidity gets in the way and it wont stay straight. I am actually growing my hair out now and have been since the beginning of fall. What i suggest you do is if you have long hair keep it long and enjoy your curls. You don't have to hate them at all and like the other girl said, the best part of being emo is that you are who you are and that's the total truth. So may be.. i suggest you if you have blonde hair get mahogany brown low lights in your hair to make it a little more punkier and if you have brown hair get black low lights (but if you get black lowlights get it done professionally) and with your bangs. get the cut that angles and covers one of your eyes.. and get layers in your hair to... short layers as well.. it will make your curls look absolutely stunning..  and keep your dark makeup around your eyes and you know.. walla! you got the emo look going on but just with curly hair but you know you could tell other girls out there that you can look great..and punk/emo/goth w.e you wanna call it.. even with curly hair! Hope that helps! *smiles and thumbs up*.. good luck!

Posted by Gafuzzy 15-Jan-2008
right on, mcklshirey.  the thing NOT to do with curly hair is shampoo it regularly. shampooing causes an imbalance of moisture and  natural  scalp oil that is death to good curls. most shampoos leave residues that make curly hair behave badly. once you break the shampoo habit, your hair may seem oily at first as  your scalp readjusts to stop overproducing sebum (naturally occurring skin oil). this doesn't last long. get over the limiting idea that being 'emo/punk' means dyed and/or straight hair. it's supposed to be about thinking for yourself, remember?

Posted by Lori 14-Jan-2008
What black straightening chemical did you use, because I have tried one before and it really over process my hair and I had to cut it all off.

Posted by Daniela 21-Oct-2007
Hi, I have curly hair too. And I always cry cause I want a punk hairstyle but I can't cause my hair gets puffy too. I am searching on the net and if I find something I will tell you.

Posted by Dani 24-Oct-2007
I have very long curly hair so i can sympathesise with you, straightening it all the time just is not possible, so I compromised and got a side fringe that i straighten and, and keep the rest curly. The other thing i found that really helps if your hairs too thick is getting it thinned, allot of hair dressers are very reluctant to do this 'oh no voluminous hair is so beautiful', but  the less hair you have the less puffy it would be, so i suggest finding a hairdresser that does what you asks and isn't scared to thin.

Posted by Mcklshirey 06-Nov-2007
I have curly hair too and the best way to handle it is to avoid anything that dries it out. So let it curl, girl. The best part of being emo is that you are who you are, right? So get an asymmetrical cut, let it pouf on humid days, and enjoy all the compliments you are going to get.

Posted by Rachel 20-Dec-2007
I have curly hair 2 all you have to do is use the black straightening chemical it doesn't cost much and it makes the hair soft and nice.
