Hair Updos Do's and Don'ts
Here are some do's and dont's for updo hairstyles that you should know before wearing them on any special occasion like wedding or prom.
DON'T try and put up newly washed hair as it is just too slippery and floppy to handle.
DO soften a chignon or bun by loosening some wisps of hair around the face, otherwise the overall effect can appear a bit harsh.
DON'T try anything to create a style that is too complicated or too structured so that it looks as though you've tried too hard. (Ivana Trump's beehive is not the look to aim for!)
DON'T use hairpieces for the first time on a big date. It's best to experiment with them beforehand. Your hairdo slipping into your soup is not going to make a good impression.
DO remember to backcomb the roots of your hair. This will set a firm foundation for the perfect updo.
DO use accessories. They are perfect as a quick cover-up for a not-so-perfect updo.
DO use coloured hair mascaras to brighten up selected pieces of hair.
DO carry a handbag-size can of hairspray and some matt hair grips with you at all times to rescue your updo in an emergency.
DO use an invisible hairnet around a bun to keep the hair in place, especially if your hair is layered or has straggly ends.
DON'T try too hard. Sometimes the quickest and messiest updos look the best.
DON'T use accessories that are too heavy as they will pull down an updo and ruin the look.
DO make the most of long hair if you have it. There are times when bigger is definitely better.
HAIR SNIP - QUICK TIP
For salon-style hair at home in an instant: to make long hair look fabulous in no time at all, here is a quick, simple hair-up trick. Secure the hair in a ponytail high on the crown using a covered elastic band. As you pull the ponytail through, catch the ends in the band to form a loop. Arrange the ends into a fan shape and separate them with gel. It doesn't matter if the strands work themselves loose, this only enhances the look.
