Liposuction

Liposuction, sometimes referred to as lipoplasty, is a process of fat removal. This procedure removes fat deposits, from various parts of the body. Some of the most popular areas for liposuction are the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, and back. Liposuction should not considered a weight loss method.

This procedure was created by Dr. Fiorgio Fischer in 1974. It started in Europe and progressed its way to the United States , where now it is extremely popular. Liposuction may be performed more in America , than anywhere else in the world. This medical procedure is generally performed, by using a hollow tube to remove fat. The tube is used in unison, with an aspirator, which acts as a mechanism, to suck the deposits out of the body.

Liposuction should never be done haphazardly. A potential patient first must be deemed a good candidate for the procedure. The process of finding out if a person is a good candidate, will involve a consultation with his or her physician. People who have preexisting conditions, such as, diabetes or circulatory illnesses, would not be good candidates.

This surgical procedure is actually considered to be cosmetic surgery. And just as with any other type of surgery, liposuction has its own risks. These are topics that a physician would discuss with you before declaring you a candidate. It is very important to understand all of the risks, and not simply the benefits of liposuction.

Liposuction, in some cases, will be divided into more than one procedure. One of the important things to note about this surgery is that there is limited amount of fat removal allowed. For the sake of safety only a certain limit of fat will be removed. If there's still more the patient and physician, would like to do, it would need to be at a later date.

Liposuction is performed with either general or local anesthesia. In some cases, people are able to return to work in as little as two days after surgery. Most commonly, patients recover fully within two weeks time. Understanding the recovery process is very important to planning this type of procedure.

During the recovery process, patients are instructed to take it easy. They are also told to wear a compression bandage over the site of surgery. This bandage can be worn for as long as four weeks. It is not uncommon to feel pain after this procedure. Doctors will either prescribe pain relief, or suggest over-the-counter medicine.

It is also not strange to see bruising after surgery. This usually fades on its own, so you don't have to be concerned. Many people will also experience swelling, and some scarring. The overall expected result, can be seen within six months of the surgery.

Liposuction can be expensive, depending on the site the surgery is to be performed on. The general price range is between $1,500 - $7,500. If for example, one wanted liposuction on their arms, the range would be $1,500 - $5,000. Therefore, it is important to not only consider the procedure, but the expense before surgery.
