Expensive Ceramic Iron Worth

Fast Ceramic Heater

Ceramic heaters and ceramic plate are the two most important components to a good ceramic iron. Good ceramic heaters enable flash-fast heating and quick recovery time. Many “ceramic” irons use conventional electric heaters (PTC) but claim to be a ceramic iron. Make sure that ceramic heaters are used.

You can usually tell by how quickly they heat up to the maximum temperature.

Smooth Ceramic Plates

Ceramic plates conduct heat faster than metallic plates. That’s why good ceramic irons heat up and recover faster than conventional irons. However, cheaply made ceramic plates have bumps and scratches. Bumps and Scratches damage even pull your hair. And also note that many “ceramic” irons in the market are not made of real ceramic plates.

You can usually tell by how smoothly the plates glide through your hair.

Tourmaline Ceramic Iron

Tourmaline generates negative ion and far-infrared. Negative ion atomizes water particles and seals hair cuticles, restoring moisture inside the hair and giving it more shine. Far-infrared (rays of certain wave-length) emits far-infra energy. This energy is absorbed by hair and heat is applied “inside out”, making transforming the shape of hair faster without having to apply excessive heat from outside.

Real tourmaline-infused iron should not require temperature higher than 400F degrees and still straighten/curl hair while giving it a beautiful shine.

Hot-spot-free Ceramic Iron

Many ceramic irons leave hot-spot marks (especially the ones that go over 400F degrees.) Hot-spot marks are often manifestations of singed damage to your hair. The best irons have even temperature throughout the plates (hot-spot-free) and give smooth, shiny finish.

Swipe your hair slowly with the iron and look closely to make sure there are no singe marks.

Consistent Temperature

It is just an important not to exceed the desired temperature as it is to maintain the minimum temperature. A rapid engagement/disengagement system maintains the temperature without over-heating.

This is not easy to tell without a sophisticated gauger. But if you have to guide the iron over your hair repeatedly to accomplish the desired style, or if you see singe marks on hair, it is most likely that the temperature is not consistent.

Great advice. I would also say that a good name, backed by a great warranty, makes a flat iron worth its price. Then, if any of the above do become problems, you have a better chance of getting a repair/replacement.
