Abrasion

When the upper layer of the skin is damage and cause superficial wounds, it is called Abrasion. It is not deep and less serious than laceration. There is only minimal bleeding and it doesn't leave any scar to the skin. It is cause by a moving contact with rough surfaces, thus scraping away layers of the Epidermis.

Causes of Abrasion

There are different causes of abrasion. Various reasons are accidental fall from low heights, minor sport accidents, traumas, bed sores and small accidents. These events can cause superficial wounds and can heal within days. Most common victims of these events are children and young kids. Most common body parts affected are knees, hands and arms.

Types of Abrasion

There are different types of abrasion depending on what causes it.

Rug Burn or Carpet Burn - abrasion cause by textile or carpeting.

Road rash - is an abrasion cause by rough road surfaces.

Friction Burn - abrasion cause by slipping ropes and other slipping surfaces.

Corneal Abrasion - is the abrasion in the cornea cause by sand and other foreign objects like contact lens.

How to Clean Abrasion?

Keeping the wound clean and infection-free is very important. Once abrasion occurs you must immediately clean it with soap and clean water. You must remove any foreign debris in the wound like sand, glass or rust. You can also use antiseptic wash in cleaning the wound and then follow it with topical antibiotic. You can cover the wound but make sure that you use clean and proper dressing. This way the wound can breathe and heals quickly. Make sure that you change the dressing often as to not further cause infection to the wound.

Home Remedies for Abrasion

If you are not into over the counter antibiotics for wounds you can also use natural home remedies for abrasion. These are safer because it doesn't contain any chemicals and doesn't have any side effects.

Popular and commonly use home remedies for abrasion are as follows:

Aloe Vera - It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It can also soothe the string and pain from the wound.

Lavender Oil - few drops can help in healing abrasion.

Calendula - It has anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic properties. It can stop bleeding and promotes skin growth.

Tea tree oil - it has antibacterial properties that is best in treating any wounds.

Cloves and Cinnamon - these herbs have antiseptic and disinfectant properties that can help in healing wounds and subsides burning feeling immediately.

Honey - It is a very effective antiseptic and heals wound immediately.

There are also home remedies for cleaning and washing Abrasion:

Thyme Tea - You can use this to wash and disinfect wounds.

Juice of Marigold Leaves - This is a very effective disinfectant for wounds.

Iodized Salt - You can dissolve Iodized salt into water and use it to wash your wound. Although it will sting, it is very effective.

Vinegar - It has natural astringent properties. You can dilute 1 part vinegar to 3 parts warm water and use it to wash your wounds.
