Arthritis, Symptoms & Arthritis Types, Arthritis Home Remedies

Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints in the body. Affected joints may be tender, warm, swollen and painful, especially when ambulating.

Types of arthritis:

Osteoarthritis - also known as degenerative joint disease commonly occurs in older persons, it is characterized by deterioration of articular cartilage and distortion in the bone producing pain and feeling of stiffness.

Gouty arthritis - develops when there is an excessive deposit of uric acid in the joints and other bone structure like: cartilages, subcutaneous tissues, and kidney.

Rheumatoid arthritis - a disease where there is inflammation of the connective tissue, most common among women between 35-45 years old. It comprises erosive changes and bilateral, symmetrical joint disease; it also affects other organ systems in the body.

Lupus arthritis - this disease commonly affects young women, indicative sign of this arthritis is the butterfly rash in the face, other organs like the kidneys, lungs, and heart may also be compromised with this disease.

How does arthritis develop?

There is a great factor credited to heredity, meaning, if in the family history there is an occurrence of arthritis to one family member, other members of the family may develop it.

Degeneration of joints due to aging.

Direct injury causing trauma to the joints.

Excessive strenuous activities causing the joints to be overused.

Extra pressure to the joints caused by obesity.

Joint inflammation resulted from gout or rheumatoid arthritis.

Signs and Symptoms of Osteoarthritis (most common type of arthritis, which can be treated by home remedies):

Patients with arthritis have complaints of: pain, redness, swelling and stiffness of the joints of the hands, hips, knees, or ankles.

Joints that are arthritic exhibit deformities or distortion, especially in the hands and fingers.

Some arthritic changes can be detected by undergoing x-ray.

Home Remedies for Arthritis

Effective arthritis home remedy is to envelope the painful joint with a flannel and leaves it overnight, to facilitate thermal effect which helps in reducing pain and swelling.

Relieve pain with a gentle massage of warm olive oil.

One effective home remedies for arthritis is diluting garlic, lavender, juniper, rosemary, sage, sassafras, or thyme in oil with a ration of 1 is to 10 parts of olive oil and use the mixture to massage painful joints.

Gentle body massage and steam baths are beneficial in treating arthritis.

Massage painful joints with hot vinegar prior to sleeping.

Light movements or exercises are advised to promote good blood circulation relieving pain.

Massage affected area daily with a mixture of 10 grams of camphor and 200 grams of mustard oil. Let the camphor dissolve in sunlight. This is an effective remedy for arthritis.

Add 4 tablespoon of Epsom salt to bathing water, this will help reduce inflammation and stiffness of arthritic joints.

Keep the body warm, as cold will stiffen the joints and will produce pain.

Balanced diet to avoid obesity or being overweight as obesity may add to joint pressure and will result to pain.
