Burning Tongue, Symptoms & Home Remedies for Burning Tongue Treatment

Burning tongue is a painful symptom of menopause; it affects women 7 times as frequent as men. Another term for burning tongue is the burning mouth syndrome. Burning tongue is sometimes referred to as glossodynia, glossopyrosis, oral galvanism, stomatodynia and stomatopyrosis. It is characterized by a burning pain or sensation on the tongue especially on the tip or back of the tongue. The burning feeling is like when you sipped a hot coffee and you burnt your tongue. This syndrome can last for days and even years.

Causes of burning tongue:

  • Yeast infection (oral candida)
  • Hormonal imbalance during menopause.
  • Bad oral habits, dental diseases, noxious oral habits (tongue biting, scalloped tongue)
  • Diabetes
  • Medications (diuretics, oral diabetic meds, some blood pressure meds)
  • Gastric Acid reflux
  • Nerve damage
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Irritating dentures, dry mouth (xerostomia)
  • Vitamin B12, niacin, iron or folic acid deficiency.
  • Allergies to foods, toothpastes, mouthwashes, chewing gums.
  • Chronic infection
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Lingual nerve damage
  • Tobacco use
  • Oral cancer

Signs and symptoms of Burning Tongue

  • Metallic taste or bitter taste in the mouth.
  • Dry mouth or thirst.
  • A tingling or numb sensation in the mouth or on the tip of the tongue.
  • Itchy mouth
  • Sticky mouth
  • Burning sensation in the mouth.

Home remedies for Burning Tongue

An effective home remedy for burning tongue is to suck on a piece of ice. It will work wonders.

Increase water intake to keep the mouth moist.

Consume vitamin B12 rich foods: potatoes, bananas, lentils, tempeh, liver oil, liver, turkey, tuna, nutritional yeast and molasses.

Another home remedy for burning tongue is to apply glycerin; it has a cooling sensation so it will relieve the burning sensation.

Take honey and milk mixture, this will increase the blood circulation of the tongue therefore, facilitates healing.

Choose to have plain foods for your meals, include lots of boiled vegetables.

Apply lavender oil on the affected area and leave overnight. Lavender oil acts as an anti septic and helps heal burning tongue.

Include iron rich foods in your regular diet.

Chew sugar free gums, this will keep the tongue moist and ease the pain.

Use baking soda in replacement of commercial toothpaste for brushing your teeth. Baking soda is milder than commercial toothpaste, using this will minimize the potential tongue irritation.

Avoid spicy foods as it may aggravate the condition of the disease.

Use ayurvedic herb triphala for gargling and babool decoction to ease burning symptoms.

Avoid drinking coffee and tea.

Chocolates and sweets should be avoided.

Alcohol consumption is prohibited.

As much as possible, avoid canned and processed foods because it has many preservatives, the best choice is to have home made meals.
