Cataract, Symptoms & Home Remedies for Cataract Treatment

The clouding in the eye lens is called cataract. Cataract is derived from the Latin word "cataracta" which literally means waterfall. It may lead to near-sightedness, color blindness, cloudy vision and even total blindness. It can be acquire in any stage of human life but it is common to older people; due to aging. It can affect both eyes but usually one eye is earlier affected than the other.

Types of Cataract

Cataracts are divided into different classifications, although it is not comprehensive and other rare types may be noted:

Classified by Etiology

Age related - this is cause by aging for older people.

Congenital - it kind of cataract is acquired at birth.

Secondary - this may be cause by drug abuse or improper drug dosage.

Traumatic - this is acquired through blunt force trauma or rupture in the eye lens and capsular.

Causes of Cataract

There are different factors as to why a person can acquire cataract.

  • Improper Nutrition - this can cause eye transparency loss and may lead to cataract.
  • Diabetes - this disease can weaken the eyes and create a cloudy vision.
  • Eye Injury - it may change the eye structure.
  • Aging - Elderly people are more susceptible to develop cataract.
  • Congenital Rubella Syndrome - this can cause cataracts to new born babies.
  • Radiation - exposure to radiation can cause cataracts.
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Metabolic Problem
  • Stress
  • Poison

Home Remedies for Cataract

There are lots of available natural remedies for cataracts that can be readily available in your own kitchen. These remedies are safe and proven to be effective. So if you are or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of cataracts, you may use the following:

Carrots - it is rich in beta carotene and vitamin A and is one of the best remedies for cataract. It is best eaten raw or in juice form.

Garlic - eating two to three cloves of garlic everyday can help in clearing the eye. But be cautious in eating garlic if you have problem with acidity.

Honey - put few drops of pure honey twice daily in the eyes to help in treating cataract.

Pumpkin - the juice of the pumpkin flower is beneficial in clearing the eyes. Simply apply to the eyelids twice daily.

Almonds - finely ground seven kernels of almonds with half gram of black pepper and a teaspoon of sugar; mix with half cup water. Drink this everyday to regain eye vigor.

Aniseed - eating six grams of aniseed everyday is believed to be beneficial. You can also mix it with equal amount of coriander seed and brown sugar and take it at 12 grams dosage.

Cardamom-grind two pieces of cardamom and mixed with warm milk.

Proper Nutrition for Cataracts

To avoid cataracts and other eye problems you must start in eating foods rich in essential vitamins like Vitamin A, C, D, E and Vitamin B-complex; and minerals like beta carotene. You must also eat lots of fruits and vegetables like cabbage, spinach, grapes and orange.
