X Chromosome Related Disorder
One of the most well known X chromosome related disorder, is called the Fragile X Syndrome. This disorder is also referred to as Martin-Bell Syndrome. Fragile X Syndrome affects boys more often than it does girls. In fact, Fragile X affects on average every 1 out of 2,000 males. But it is only detected, in every 1 out of 259 females.
What is the Fragile X Syndrome?
Fragile X Syndrome is considered to be a genetic syndrome, which results in a variety of details noticed in its victims. Children, who are diagnosed with Fragile X, tend to have exhibited any number of these. One of the most commonly noticed differences in these children, are physical details.
Fragile X victims tend to have specific physical challenges. Many children with this syndrome have vision problems. Some of them even develop a lazy eye. What Causes Fragile X?
There is no known cure for Fragile X Syndrome, but there is what is believed to be, a cause. Fragile X, being a genetic disorder, is caused by a mutation on the X chromosome. Specifically, this mutation exists on the FMR 1 gene.
Specialists are doing specific studies on this syndrome, hoping to understand it better. Through these studies, it is also hoped to be able to deal better with this disorder.
There are common symptoms of Fragile X.
Some of the most common symptoms of the Fragile X Syndrome has to do with appearance. Children with this syndrome often have prominent features that are easy to discern. They most times have an elongated face. Along with this, sufferers also tend to have protruding ears, as well as, flat shaped feet.
Another common feature children with Fragile X experience, is having low muscle tone. Many of these symptoms also meet the basic criteria of autism, too. Some symptoms are only noticed when those with Fragile X reach their late thirties or early forties. They often have difficulties with memory, as it relates to performing simple tasks.
Treatment can help with Fragile X Syndrome.
Behavioral treatment can be very beneficial to those suffering from Fragile X Syndrome. Parent should seek the help of their health care professional to find appropriate treatment. In some cases, this will be through participating in special education practices. Through these practices, children with this syndrome can learn in their own way, and speed.
Medications have also been used to treat children with Fragile X. The specific avenues available for this specific type of treatment, is something that must be addressed with your physician. Children with Fragile X Syndrome can also be treated for their physical abnormalities.
