When it comes to hair color, we live in exciting times. We can darken
hair for a day or a month, brighten strands
permanently, even make raven-coloured
tresses as pale as sunlight. We can add lighter,
brighter, or darker stripes, as well as cloak
grey hair in the colour it once was or paint
strands in a kaleidoscope of rainbow-inspired
shades. We can opt for hair colour that
gradually jades with time (and leaves no
tell-tale roots) or colour that stays with the
hair strand as it grows out.
Blocks of permanent hair colour can be used to create
spectacular effects intended to make an impact. While striking,
this look is probably too extreme for most of us.
How Hair Color Works
Generally speaking, the more temporary a colour formula is, the less
hair; the more permanent a colour, the more damage it does. Also,
the more temporary a colour formula, the more subtle the
change it can create, while the more permanent a colour is, the
more extreme the change it can produce. This has to do with
chemistry.
Colours that wash out in less than 12 shampoos -
temporary and semi-permanent colours - simply coat the
hair shaft; because they aren't hanging around, they don't need
chemicals to push pigment molecules into the strand's cuticle
layer.

I am a natural born redhead. I am 54 years old, and as I have aged my hair has gotten lighter with much gray. I have been coloring it with over the counter hair colors. But, unfortunately, I can't find a color that works. I always end up with hair that is too dark. What is the best brand or color name for a natural redhead who wants her red hair back? And can you use the entire box of hair color, or will it make the hair too dark? I have light to medium auburn colored hair. Thank you.
I have been using the Wella Color Charm (demi-permanent) color - Fiery Red- for a few months now. My natural hair color is a dark blonde. I want my natural hair back. Will this color eventually wash out, or because I have used it so many times, need to be stripped out. If it can be removed, is there a demi-permanent hair color remover? If it will wash out, how long can I expect it to take, as it has already been five weeks since the last touch up on my roots. Thanks. Jennifer

I used a demi-permanant color on my, gray & br uncolored, hair.
It is way too dark (lt, nateral brown)...lt choco brown. Anyway, i
have washed it bt 12 X with Dawn, HEad & shoulders, and others
it has not faded at all. Is there anyway to get it lighter? Icheked

I have long hair it is down pass my shoulder. I have my hair colored professionally (I never colored it at home). I have noticed my hair is very dry and very very frizzy actually its like straw. I never had this problem until I started to color it. I have tried all the salon products, but have had no results. I was thinking about cutting it really short even though it won't suit me. Now I wear a baseball hat to cover it up. I have talked to my hair stylis about this but she don't know what to do, except color my roots every 4 week and color my long hair every 8 weeks, but I think this will only make it worst. I hope you can help me.
