Permanent Hair Color

As its name implies, permanent colour stays on your hair permanently Its tenacity becomes especially apparent when the coloured strands grow out: you'll see a line between them and the new root growth. This, and the damage permanent colour can cause (the formula contains both peroxide and ammonia), are its negative aspects.

On a more positive note, with permanent hair colour you don't need to worry about losing the colour you love after 6 of 24 Shampoos, you get superior grey coverage, you Can brighten or darken hair as dramatically as you like, and you can lighten hair upto four levels. Be aware, however, that if you'd like to lighten hair more drastically you're better off with double-process colour.

Permanent colour can lighten hair only so much - go beyond four levels and it won't be strong enough to remove all the natural melanin in your hair. The not-so-gorgeous result? Strands that are brassy, brassy, brassy .

Permanent Hair Color Levels

When a stylist talks about taking you three levels lighter or darker, he or she means trying a shade three levels lighter or darker than your own. To confuse matters, many hair-colour products you find in the shops use the word "shade" as a synonym for "level".

In the hairdressing world, however, "shade" refers to a colour's brightness and whether it has a gold, red, blue, or neutral undertone. In other words, a medium brown and medium auburn are both level 4, but are different shades.

Colour level categories

In the world of hairdresser hair colour, hair is categorized from 1 to 10 depending on how much pigment it has. Since black hair has the most pigment it is labelled as level 1, while the palest platinum blond is considered level 10.

What is the best permanent hair color product for maintaining a level 3 (dark auburn) hair color for someone with naturally "dark" dish water blond hair?

How long does permanent hair color last?  My natural hair color is dark brunette, however, I was rather blond over the summer.  I wanted to go back to my natural color and the color had a very green tint to it.  I then colored my hair twice since that time and my hair turned our very dark, almost black.  I then had it colored again yesterday, and it was to be a chocolate cherry color and its looks extremely red, almost purple.  Help!  How long will this stay in my hair?
