Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an auto immune disease that results in hair loss on the scalp or anywhere on the body. However alopecia is an unpredictable disease that can happen at any time in a person's life span. Alopecia affects about 1.7 percent of the world's population, making this a very noticeable disease. When a person has alopecia, the effect of this disease is that hair follicles are attacked by a persons own immune system which stumps the hair growth stage of the follicle. This disease is noticeable on the scalp, where it usually starts with one or a few small bald patches. Some cases of alopecia can be more severe, where loss of nose hairs as well as eyebrows and eyelashes will exist.

Causes of Alopecia Areata

There can be many factors when one develops Alopecia areata, it is said that heredity can play a major role in the cause of this disease. Families with other diseases and illness such as asthma, diabetes, thyroid malfunctions, eczema or other immune disorders are more susceptible to alopecia. Other causes of this disease can be stress related or if the person suffers from a chronic illness as well as digesting a diet with little protein and iron. Women can develop hair loss or alopecia when they are going through stages of menopause.

Alopecia Areata Symptoms

The symptoms of alopecia are very visual and easy to detect, however it is recommended to seek immediate care of a physician so they can determine that hair loss is created by Alopecia and not some other form or hair loss or hair loss caused by chemicals and hair products. Some of the common symptoms of Alopecia would be balding, hair loss, temporarily hair loss and patches of bald spots throughout the scalp. The symptoms of alopecia are very vague and do not cause any physical pain or discomfort, most likely if anything the symptoms will cause embarrassment due to the uneven patches and extreme hair loss in certain areas.

Alopecia Areata Treatment & Prevention

Alopecia Areata has no permanent treatment, but there are ways that one can treat the alopecia to stop the hair loss and prevent the hair from falling out any further. Some basic treatments that people may try for sever hair loss is the use of synthetic and natural wigs to cover up the patches. Treatment may be given orally by products such as oral finasteride or oral antifungal medications that will prevent further hair loss from occurring. Unfortunately once an area of the hair has been affected by alopecia it is highly unlikely for the hair to grow back, however there are a lot of ways where one can effectively treat alopecia by trying some of the treatment options listed above, so they can go on with their normal lives and enjoy being healthy and happy.

Alopecia Areata is a common disease that does not discriminate against race, gender or age, it can happen to anyone at anytime in their life. So it is recommend to get regular check ups at your family doctor to make sure you are not affected by this skin disease or any other type of illness.
