Hair Loss Solutions

To find the correct hair loss solution it is necessary to first determine the cause of the hair loss. Common causes of hair loss in both men and women are genetic, autoimmune disorders, childbirth, stress, poor nutrition, side effects from prescription medicine and chemotherapy.

Male Pattern Baldness Solution

Genetic hair loss, also known as male pattern baldness, although it can also affect women, is caused by a genetic predisposition of the follicles to stop producing hair earlier than normal. There is a link between this condition and excess testosterone, but hormone therapy is not an effective hair loss solution for this type of problem. The best hair loss solution for genetic hair loss is hair restoration surgery, in which tissue containing follicles from the subject's own head in an area where the hair is not thinning is transplanted. Hair restoration surgery is the only permanent hair loss solution, but it is expensive, with $4,000 being the minimum cost. Other hair loss solutions for genetic hair loss include the medicines Rogaine and Propecia, which are more effective in some cases than others. These medicines are often prescribed in combination, as Rogaine is preferable for new hair growth and Propecia is preferable for stopping further hair loss. They both must be taken continuously to work - if you stop the medication, the effect stops too - and can cost as much as $700 a month.

An autoimmune disease known as alopecia areata is another common cause of hair loss in which small patches of hair fall out in various spots on the head. Alopecia areata may also be treated with Rogaine, but localized injections of steroids, topical sensitizers which cause an allergic reaction in the scalp that leads to hair growth, and photochemotherapy are other viable hair loss solutions when the cause is alopecia areata. This problem can also be improved cosmetically with hair weaves.

Solutions and Treatments for Various Hair Loss Types

Hair loss due to childbirth is normal and does not require a solution; when the hormones rebalance after pregnancy the hair will eventually grow back on its own.

Hair loss due to stress or poor nutrition can be treated with dietary supplements, especially those containing iron, vitamins A, B and C, copper, zinc, and protein. Proper rest and eating a diet rich in natural whole foods will make the supplements more effective, and you can usually expect to see results within 3 to 4 weeks.

If your hair loss is a result of side effects from a prescription medication, discuss the situation with your doctor to find out if there is an alternative medicine or solution you can take to prevent the problem. Common medications with hair loss as a side effect include blood thinners and cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Hair loss from chemotherapy is usually temporary, with the hair growing back once the rounds of treatment are finished, but it is one of the most traumatic causes of hair loss. Hair loss during chemotherapy cannot be prevented, and is commonly managed by wearing hats or wigs. However, it is becoming increasingly popular for chemotherapy patients to go bald as a badge of courage.
