Hair Thinning

Thinning Hair is a common problem that can be experienced by both men and women. Since our society places so much emphasis on physical appearance, hair thinning can be a very embarrassing problem. It is a condition that affects the confidence of those who have to deal with it. Here you will find information about the causes and symptoms of hair thinning, as well as the treatment options that are available for this common condition.

Causes of Hair Thinning

There are a variety of different factors which may contribute to thinning hair. It is possible for hair thinning to be hereditary. This is referred to as male or female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. It can also be caused by a number of health conditions, including hypothyroidism, diabetes, anemia and cancer. A diet that is not rich in essential nutrients may cause you to experience thinning of the hair. Stress, which may be caused by major surgeries such as chemotherapy, can also contribute to hair loss and thinning of hair. Last, but certainly not least, hormonal imbalances can cause hair thinning. These can occur during pregnancy or menopause. Most people will experience at least one type of hormonal imbalance during some point in their lifetime.

Symptoms of Hair Thinning

The symptoms that you will experience when you have hair thinning will mainly depend on whether you are a male or female. Men will typically experience most of their hair thinning on the top of the head and at their hairlines. Women, on the other hand, will experience most of their hair loss between the area that their bangs are to their crowns. Both men and women can experience thinning hair at a very early age, but men tend to experience it as early as the age of 19. Aside from the areas where you may notice a hair loss, you will also probably notice that you have lost a lot more hair in the shower or in brushes than you normally do. The amounts will typically have to be significantly higher than usual for you to even notice this symptom, however.

Treatment Options for Hair Thinning

If you have recently began to experience thinning of hair, you probably feel as though there is nothing that you can do to stop it. However, it is important to realize that there are treatment options available for hair thinning.

One of the most common treatment options is the over-the-counter topical hair loss product called Rogaine. Another common hair thinning treatment option is Propecia, which is taken in pill form and prescribed by a doctor. These and other hair loss products are designed to slow down or prevent the process of thinning hair and, in some cases, may aide in hair regrowth.

There are also several surgical procedures which are available as treatment options for hair thinning. Some of these procedures include hair transplants and scalp reduction. Lastly, you may want to consider wearing a wig or hair piece to hide the areas of hair which have experienced thinning. Have a look at our hairstyles suggestions for thin hair.
