Male Pattern Hair Loss

Among men, one of the most common causes of hair loss is male hair loss, which is more commonly referred to as male pattern baldness. The scientific name for this condition is androgenic alopecia. There is a lot to know about this cause of hair loss. Below are some of the things that you may be wondering about male hair loss, such as the causes, prevention and treatment.

What Causes Male Hair Loss?

Male pattern baldness is mainly known to be a hereditary condition. What this means is that if one of your family members has pattern baldness, you also may learn that you have it. Another one of the factors that is known to play a huge role in male hair loss is a hormonal imbalance. It is believed that men with pattern baldness have a lower testosterone level, as well as higher levels of androgens, than others. Once again, however, this is believed to be due to genetically determined factors.

How Can Male Hair Loss Be Prevented?

Since male pattern baldness is known to be caused by genetically determined factors, it is believed that there are no ways to prevent hair loss due to this condition. On the other hand, many believe that certain lifestyle changes, such as exercise, may help reduce the amount of hair loss that you may experience. Using hair loss products, such as Rogaine or Propecia, is known to be one way to slow down or completely stop the hair loss process and, in some cases, even cause hair to regrow. Other than this, however, not a whole lot can be done to prevent hair loss due to male pattern baldness.

Treatments for Male Pattern Hair Loss

As previously mentioned, one available treatment for male hair loss is the use of hair loss products, including Rogaine or Propecia. Of course, keep in mind that these hair loss products will not necessarily treat hair loss, but will slow down the process. Even more importantly, these products need to be used as soon as you begin to notice that you a're losing hair in order for you to see the best results. Aside from these hair loss products, one of the other treatments that may be an option for those with male hair loss is surgical hair loss treatments, such as hair implants. Hair transplantation, in which hair follicles are moved from the back to of the head to the area where you are balding, may be another hair loss treatment option to consider in the case of male hair loss.

As you can see, there is much to know about male hair loss. If you or someone that you know is affected by this common cause of hair loss among the male population, it is important to realize that you are not alone. Many suffer from this condition. You will want to make sure that you talk to a doctor about available treatment and prevention options that may be suitable for you and the hair loss that you have been experiencing due to pattern baldness.
