Hawaiian Tattoos
When you think of Hawaiian tattoos you probably picture colorful flowers, leis, oceans and tropical colors. Hawaiian tattoos may consist of all those beautiful and vibrant colors, but they are not limited to other designs that represent the Hawaiian culture. Most of the Hawaiian arm tattoos were from tribal traditions.
Hawaiian tribal tattoos were an important aspect of the Hawaiian culture to the point where the Hawaiians had tattoo gods and every time a member of the community got a tattoo a prayer would be performed inside of a temple. Kakau is the name for the Hawaiian tribal tattoo art, which has been performed for many years and some reasons the Hawaiians would get tattoos included, for personal identification, protection and decoration.

The Hawaiians also wore a tattoo as a symbol of mourning for a loved one. Most Hawaiian tribal tattoos were black and made out of a mixture of sugar can juice and kukui nuts.
Hawaiians used bird beaks and bear claws to create beautiful tattoos. The common tattoo designs consist of dolphins, tropical flowers, arrows, sea turtles and lizards. Men and women both wore tattoos. For a male the most common place would be his arms, face, leg and abdominal area as for a woman the most common places would be the hand wrist and tongue… ouch!
