Polynesian Tattoos
Polynesia is a group of over 1,000 islands that spread over the Pacific Ocean. It is stated that the marquesa Islands were the first island where the Polynesians came about and than spread through French Polynesia, Cooks Islands, and more. Tattoo art was necessary in the Polynesian culture, because there was no written word, so tattoos were used to determine family history and their spirituality.
Polynesian tattoos are usually large and have significant meaning, so the amount that one will spend at a tattoo parlor may be quite lengthy. The French Polynesia differed from the culture of other tribes, because in French Polynesia only people of high social rankings were tattooed and their whole body was tattooed except for the face. The women and men were both tattooed, however girls were tattooed at a young age and than later in life tattooed again when they became a women. Women would often lift up their skirts and show their tattoo to men that sparked their interest.

Polynesian tattoos are very detailed and can be quite painful, so be prepared to sit at the tattoo parlor for hours. However every ounce of pain may be well worth it, because when your artist is done, you will walk out of the parlor with a piece of history on your body that is definitely worth telling story about.
