Flat Irons -
Straighten up for Summer
Summer is the time for simple pleasures, including your hairstyle. Sexy, sophisticated, or sweet, you can pull off a stylish simple look with straight hair. But when it comes down to it, it is not so simple achieving that sought-after straight hair especially when humidity is in full force.
Hair Straightening Approaches
Here are three popular approaches to straighten up your hair for summer.
Flat Irons
What was once an innovative new concept, flat irons are now practically as common as curling irons. Flat irons is a specialized straightening iron with flat ceramic plates and is a do-it-yourself process to make your hair straighter, shinier, and smoother. This frizz-eliminator only lasts until your next hair wash, so the practice of constant straightening can get tiresome. But on the positive side, they come in many different models and price ranges so they are an attractive tool to tame those tresses.
Here are four different looks you can achieve with a flat iron:
Flat Straight: Insert a 1 to 2-inch section of hair between the plates at the roots. Then press the handle together and glide slowly through the hair from the root to the ends.
Soft Curls: Insert a 1 to 2-inch section of hair between the plates. Gently press the handle together and glide the iron to the ends, slowly winding the hair around the plates.
Flip Out: Insert a 1 to 2-inch section of hair between the plates. Press the handle together and glide slowly through the hair beginning at the roots, then slightly flip out the ends.
Flip In: Insert a 1 to 2-inch section of hair between the plates. Press the handle together and glide slowly through the hair beginning at the roots, then slightly flip in the ends. If you don't have the time (or the patience) for a flat iron, there are two other popular techniques for going straight.
A relaxing agent is a chemical straightening process that African-American women have been using for decades. This process changes the basic structure of the hair follicle. There are mild, regular, and strong relaxer strengths, so it is important to do a strand test prior to treating all your hair. Be sure to find a stylist who is licensed and experienced in this procedure, because if done carelessly, your hair could encounter a chemical burn. This process usually takes a few hours and costs around $200-$400, depending on where you live.
The highly-raved Japanese thermal reconditioning is the newest trend in hair straightening procedures. It is also a chemical process that involves treatment, followed by ironing each strand of hair. Perhaps the biggest benefit of thermal reconditioning is that your hair remains straight, regardless of the weather conditions outside. Beware though, your new hair growth will appear your natural texture, so repeat treatments are necessary. Be sure to find an experienced stylist to reduce your risk of hair damage. As you can imagine, this process takes several hours and can cost anywhere from $800-$1,500, depending on where you live.
